NASCAR’s allure extends beyond individual races; it encompasses the circuit’s history, unique track environments, and the overall race weekend experience that varies by location. A new Home Turn special produced by NASCAR Studios and Bluefoot Entertainment, known for the acclaimed True South series on SEC Network, is designed to highlight these aspects.
Host Jay Busbee, recognized for his work at Yahoo Sports, discussed the Daytona-focused special with Awful Announcing ahead of its debut on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. ET on Fox. This special could evolve into a series, aligning with Busbee’s perception of NASCAR as more than just a sport, but an entire experience. “I love NASCAR as an entire entity, not just a sport,” he commented. “NASCAR, like college football, is an event that encompasses more than just the race itself.”
He elaborated, “While you park your car and leave after a baseball or basketball game, NASCAR often requires a full weekend commitment, creating a shared and communal experience that involves generations.” Daytona, with its historical significance and prominence, was the ideal track to launch Home Turn, giving it a unique advantage due to its long-standing traditions.
“Daytona is, of course, the Super Bowl of NASCAR,” remarked Busbee humorously, noting that it predates the Super Bowl itself. “It was the perfect time to tell the story of Daytona, especially with the nation’s attention focused on NASCAR this weekend.”

Busbee is optimistic about expanding Home Turn to other tracks, believing each one has its own compelling stories waiting to be told. The idea originated from NASCAR Studios, which collaborated with Bluefoot Entertainment, and brought Busbee on board as the host. “This project stemmed from NASCAR Studios’ collaboration with Bluefoot, who wanted me to host. We started discussions last summer, followed by a scouting trip in November and filming in December,” he explained.
Reflecting on his collaboration with Bluefoot, Busbee expressed, “The team at Bluefoot are true professionals, both passionate about their work and enjoyable to collaborate with. It’s fantastic to be around individuals who excel at what they do.”

Busbee has long been fascinated by the intersection of culture and sports. He runs a free weekly Substack newsletter called Flashlight and a Biscuit, which explores Southern food and culture intertwined with sports narratives. He stated that the newsletter allows him to express themes that don’t fit within the framework of Yahoo Sports.

“Sportswriting is my passion, and Yahoo Sports has been an incredible partner, but I also value exploring the cultural aspects that connect with sports,” he shared. “Analytics have their place, but my focus is primarily on storytelling and cultural connections that resonate in the stands, press box, or after the game.”

Busbee hopes that Home Turn can merge cultural storytelling with the NASCAR experience, fostering a sense of community among fans. “If even one viewer visits local places featured in the show, we’ll consider it a success. It’s about creating a larger community and a sense of belonging among sports fans,” he stated. NASCAR Studios’ involvement underscores a trend where leagues are increasingly producing ancillary programming to deepen fan engagement. This includes series like HBO/NFL Films’ Hard Knocks and the popular Drive to Survive, which showcases the culture around sports.
Busbee acknowledged the challenge of deepening fan connections, noting that NASCAR’s reliance on individual drivers can make it difficult when those drivers retire. However, he emphasized that the surrounding community enhances the sport’s appeal and that NASCAR Studios is actively engaged in uncovering diverse stories across tracks. “For anyone who hasn’t experienced a race, I encourage you to attend. It’s a unique experience, and there are countless behind-the-scenes stories to share,” he urged.
In closing, Busbee expressed optimism that Home Turn will resonate with viewers, saying, “We’re all on the lookout for innovative storytelling methods; hopefully, this series will forge meaningful connections with people.”
