The Pittsburgh Steelers navigated the 2024 NFL season with Justin Fields and Russell Wilson as their quarterbacks. Shortly after the season concluded, a report surfaced indicating their interest in adding another quarterback—a former No. 1 overall pick.
Trevor Lawrence, drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2021 from Clemson, signed a staggering $275 million extension a few years later. Despite this hefty contract, the Steelers have shown interest in Lawrence, according to Big Ten Network reporter Ryan Burr, who tweeted that the “Steelers have made inquiries to the Jaguars about a trade for QB Trevor Lawrence.”
The Steelers find themselves in a quarterback quandary: having two quarterbacks often implies uncertainty about their commitment to either. Wilson’s future with the team hangs in the balance, even though the organization has stated their desire to retain him—at least publicly. Fields, on the other hand, remains a work-in-progress. He has struggled to meet the expectations set during his draft with the Chicago Bears, a situation complex enough that it can’t solely be blamed on him, yet he hasn’t made significant strides either.
Lawrence hasn’t entirely lived up to his own expectations; his substantial contract has not translated into consistent progression for him and the Jaguars. While they made the playoffs two years ago, that achievement seems increasingly serendipitous. The team has since faltered and shows little promise for the future.
As the quarterback carousel in Pittsburgh continues to spin, we await to see if a resolution is on the horizon.
