The much-anticipated Celtics City docuseries now has a trailer, shared by co-executive producer Bill Simmons on X Wednesday. “It’s about 8 decades of the Celtics, the NBA, Boston and America,” Simmons noted.
Coming March 3 on Max — our new @HBO docuseries, ‘Celtics City.’ It’s about 8 decades of the Celtics, the NBA, Boston and America. I’m an EP. Find it 3/3 on @StreamOnMax. (I swear we didn’t pick that date cuz of Larry.) Here’s the trailer. pic.twitter.com/POKxge6SYZ

The series premieres on Max on March 3. First announced in March 2024, the series is an ambitious project, and Simmons has acknowledged the pressure involved: “I think we felt a lot of pressure. How do you do this in an honest way, and not have it turn into an infomercial?” he told The Boston Globe last year.
The trailer captures the essence of the Celtics’ legacy, highlighting their 18 NBA titles, including the 2024 championship, and featuring franchise legends like Larry Bird and Bill Russell, as well as more somber moments involving Len Bias and Reggie Lewis. Los Angeles Lakers great James Worthy joined in, expressing his feelings about the iconic Celtics leprechaun: “I’d look at that little leprechaun, and sometimes I just wanted to spit in his face.”
“There have been documentaries about a lot of this stuff that we’re covering. So we wanted to keep it fresh and we wanted it to really feel pretty special and unique,” Simmons stated to The Globe last year.
While it’s challenging to gauge the overall quality of a series from a 2-minute and 30-second trailer, the preview appears promising. This docuseries is a must-watch not only for Celtics fans but for all NBA enthusiasts as well.
