Every so often in sports, there’s an intriguing moment when an announcer highlights a relative achieving something noteworthy on the court, field, or track. A recent example occurred in Round 5 of the 2025 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship in Tampa on Saturday, where supercross legend James Stewart Jr. was the analyst during his brother Malcolm’s remarkable first win in the premier 450SX class, marking his 109th start in that category and taking place in their hometown. Here’s an NBC clip showcasing postrace moments, including Malcolm’s thoughts shared with play-by-play voice Leigh Diffey, James’ postrace interview with Malcolm (starting about 30 seconds in), and an interview with their father, James Stewart Sr. (starting about 1:00 in):

Among the highlights, the interview between James Jr. and Malcolm featured some memorable lines. Malcolm expressed, “Big bro, you know. You’ve done this a long time, racing Daytona and Jacksonville, and you know there’s something about that hometown crowd, buddy. I don’t know if they were twisting the throttle for me, because, for a split second, I was like, ‘Alright, I need to get this done.’ I was feeling really good, and you know what, Stewart is back in the whoops, Y’all!”
The 39-year-old James Jr. has had an incredible supercross career, featuring two AMA Supercross 450cc championships, three AMA Motocross 450cc championships, 50 premier class Supercross race victories, and two 125cc AMA Supercross titles. After retiring from racing in 2016, he began broadcasting the AMA Supercross and Motocross championships following their unification in 2022.
Malcolm has been competing in the AMA Supercross and Motocross championships since 2011, having previously secured the AMA Supercross 250cc East championship. With this victory, he and James Jr. made history as the first brothers to win top-class AMA Supercross races, making James Jr.’s presence in the commentary booth all the more remarkable.
