The Philadelphia Eagles organization has received countless congratulatory messages on social media following their Super Bowl LIX victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. NBC also acknowledged this triumph but did so in a manner that seemed more like a promotion for their streaming service, Peacock.
Philadelphia’s first regular season game took place in Sao Paolo, Brazil, and was a Peacock exclusive, initiating this year’s International Games series against the Green Bay Packers. Reminder posts were made on X to underline the Eagles’ participation in the Peacock-exclusive broadcast during Week 1.
NBC Sports PR issued a statement on X, noting, “Congratulations to the Philadelphia Eagles on their second Super Bowl victory and the first-ever NFL Championship win by a team that began the season with a game available nationally exclusively on a streaming service.”

This acknowledgment from NBC is notably selective, as streaming-exclusive games have only recently gained traction among networks; NBC has hosted such games exclusively on its streaming platform for just the past two seasons. Consequently, many media members on X pointed out how NBC’s post seemed to shift focus to themselves in light of the Eagles’ success.
“Love this flex,” wrote former Barstool personality Jake Marsh. “Hang the banner. Where were you when a team who began the season with a game available nationally exclusively on a streaming service won the Super Bowl for the first time ever?”

Roy Bellamy, senior producer of the Dan Le Batard Show, commented, “They made the Eagles win about themselves,” while Jared Barton of CBS News Pittsburgh stated, “Might be the dumbest waste of a tweet I have seen on this app.” Ralph D. Russo of The Athletic added, “Doing too much.”

The most recent season revealed a growing trend, especially with Netflix joining the mix for a couple of Christmas Day games. This highlights that the future of streaming will only expand. However, NBC’s aggressive promotion of their streaming service amidst the Eagles’ Super Bowl victory has not been well-received by many in the media.
