A lot has changed for the Kansas City Chiefs organization in 15 years. From a middle-of-the-road franchise to one that now has the opportunity to be considered the greatest football dynasty of all time, it’s clear that the Chiefs’ turnaround involved significant transformations.
Perhaps the most critical change has been their draft process. The Chiefs have struck gold with numerous notable draft picks, including Chris Jones, Patrick Mahomes, and Xavier Worthy. However, the team’s draft operations were far from polished when NFL Network analyst Gerald McCoy went through his own draft process in 2010. In fact, it’s almost miraculous that the franchise was winning any games, considering the type of question they posed to McCoy fifteen years ago.
During a segment on NFL GameDay Morning that aired for the upcoming NFL Draft Combine, the show revisited an interview McCoy gave during his 2010 combine experience, where he recounted an…interesting question that one franchise posed during the draft process. “What was the most bizarre question or situation…just give us something where you went, ‘Wow, that’s kind of weird,’” McCoy was asked.

McCoy responded, “On game day, do you wear a jockstrap or a G-string?” His deadpan reply was met with disbelief as the NFL Network crew quickly rebutted, “That didn’t happen. That did not happen.” But McCoy confirmed, “Oh, it happened,” and went on to share further details, revealing, “You wanna know who it was? Ironically, it was the Kansas City Chiefs who asked me that!”
“Before this regime,” Steve Mariucci noted, to which McCoy affirmed, “Yes, before this regime.” Rich Eisen then reminded viewers, “Yeah, Todd Haley was the head coach back then.” It seems that under head coach Andy Reid, the Chiefs organization has adopted a more serious and impactful approach to questioning prospective rookies.
For anyone curious, Gerald McCoy clarified that he wears neither a jockstrap nor a G-string—opting instead for compression shorts.
