Tony Dungy believes that the Pro Football Hall of Fame voters missed the mark this year, and given his role, he has a unique perspective. As one of the voters, he expressed his disappointment during an interview with WISH 8 Indianapolis sports anchor Anthony Calhoun.
The Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2025 was revealed Thursday night, with Eric Allen, Jared Allen, and Antonio Gates being the only three players from the Modern-Era Players list to qualify, alongside Seniors finalist Sterling Sharpe. Despite Dungy’s successful coaching of the Indianapolis Colts to a Super Bowl victory in 2006, two of his former players, wide receiver Reggie Wayne and kicker Adam Vinatieri, did not make the cut.
“I’m a little surprised at that [Wayne and Vinatieri missing out],” Dungy remarked. “I’m disappointed for those two guys, but I’m even more disappointed in the whole process. I’m one of the voters, and we sat there and had an all-day Zoom meeting trying to break things down, splitting hairs between 10 and 12 really gifted candidates, and we only elected three modern-day individuals into the hall.”
Dungy further elaborated, stating, “We were discussing eight and nine guys that should have gone in, so to have Adam Vinatieri and Reggie Wayne sitting there and not getting in while we elected only three doesn’t make sense to me.”
Dungy doesn’t hold back!
Some strong words from HOF Coach @TonyDungy about the process of selecting the 2025 Pro Football Hall of Fame class. We also talked #Colts Reggie Wayne and Adam Vinatieri not headed to Canton this year.

The selection committee had the opportunity to elect up to five Modern-Era Players for this year’s class, requiring each candidate to garner 80% of the votes for election. This four-person Class of 2025 will mark the smallest induction since 2005. However, there remains a strong possibility that Wayne and Vinatieri will eventually be inducted into the Hall of Fame, joining Dungy, who himself was inducted in 2016.
