Bill Belichick has added a familiar name to his coaching staff at the University of North Carolina, hiring Jamie Collins, the former New England Patriots linebacker who won Super Bowl XLIX with the team. Collins will take on the role of an assistant on defense, as anticipated for the former All-Pro.
TMZ Sports reported the news. Belichick drafted Collins in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft out of Southern Miss. Over nearly a decade in the NFL, Collins had a significant career, which included three successful stints in Foxborough, and he was part of the Patriots’ Super Bowl team that dramatically defeated the Seattle Seahawks in 2015. He also played for the Cleveland Browns and the Detroit Lions.
Throughout his NFL career, Collins finished with over 700 tackles, 25+ sacks, and 12 interceptions. North Carolina hired Belichick this offseason in a surprising move after parting ways with Mack Brown. Though Belichick has never been a head coach at the collegiate level, he seems undeterred by the challenges of the evolving landscape of college football.
It will be interesting to see how this venture unfolds for UNC.
