The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets have made a significant move by hiring Texas associate head coach and safeties coach Blake Gideon as their new defensive coordinator, according to a report from Matt Zenitz. Gideon, who was previously a top assistant for Texas, brings a wealth of experience to the Yellow Jackets coaching staff, as head coach Brent Key seeks to strengthen his program.
Prior to his coaching career, Gideon played for the University of Texas from 2008 to 2011, followed by a brief three-year stint in the NFL with the Arizona Cardinals and Denver Broncos, where he reached Super Bowl 48 in 2013. Since entering college football in 2014, he has had coaching roles at several institutions including Florida, Auburn, Western Carolina, Georgia State, Houston, Ole Miss, and Texas, where he has worked as a safeties coach, defensive backs coach, and special teams coordinator.
This will mark Gideon’s first major coordinating role, joining a Georgia Tech program that showed promise with a 7-6 record in 2024 and has the potential to be strong in 2025. From a recruiting standpoint, Georgia Tech is hopeful that Gideon’s connections in Texas will aid in attracting quality talent from that prestigious football-rich state.
“Georgia Tech is set to hire Texas associate head coach/safeties coach Blake Gideon as its new defensive coordinator,” Zenitz wrote on X. This should be an intriguing hire for the program.
