Rex Ryan may have faltered in his public campaign for the New York Jets coaching position, but his twin brother Rob Ryan is embracing a new role at USC. Judging by his introductory press conference, it seems the Trojans and the college football scene might not be fully prepared for what’s in store.
With extensive experience as a highly regarded NFL defensive coordinator and two Super Bowl wins as part of the New England Patriots dynasty in the early 2000s, Rob Ryan has noteworthy credentials. However, his last stint in college football dates back to the late 1990s with Oklahoma State. He is now joining the Trojans as an assistant head coach and linebackers coach. Both Ryan brothers are recognized for their distinct personalities, which were on FULL DISPLAY during Rob Ryan’s first presser at USC. You can watch the full thing here. The conference primarily featured numerous name drops and anecdotes highlighting his connections to the school and the broader football community over the years.
A particular clip from The Trojan Blade gained traction on social media, showcasing Ryan narrating an extended tale about his former player, Kaluka Maiava, whose nephew, Jayden, is now the starting quarterback at USC. The moment saw him moving around the room away from the podium, leading to an atmosphere of near-complete silence from the gathered press, except for one awkward chuckle that likely punctuated the joke’s punchline.
The only element missing from this press conference was Ryan reminiscing about wearing an onion on his belt because it was the style at the time.

Just imagine, this is the Ryan brother still actively coaching and not appearing on television! Can USC provide Rob Ryan with press availability each week during the season? If so, it would undoubtedly become the highlight of the fall.
