As the 2024-25 season drew to a close, the Atlanta Falcons faced the difficult choice of parting ways with Kirk Cousins as their starting quarterback in favor of rookie Michael Penix Jr. Despite this decision, Cousins remains optimistic about his future and believes he has much more to contribute. It appears that Penix Jr. will at least have the initial opportunity to start in 2025, leaving Cousins without a clear starting role unless he is traded.
In a recent interview on Good Morning Football, Cousins openly discussed his situation with the Falcons, asserting that he believes he has “a lot of good football left” in him, regardless of whether that’s with Atlanta or another team. “I definitely feel like I have a lot of good football left in me,” he stated. “Time will tell. It’s still kind of uncertain. We’ll get to March and know a lot more. But my main focus now is getting healthy, as I have to prioritize my physical well-being.”
Cousins acknowledged his goal is to be fully fit for the 2025 season, a focus that was not always present during the previous season. “I’m no good to the Falcons, I’m no good to a team if I’m not feeling really good,” he added. “That’s really where my attention has been through January and February, especially now that the season has wrapped up—I want to take all the time I can to feel my best.”
Cousins has a history of delivering exceptional performances when in the right circumstances, evidenced by his four Pro Bowl selections over 13 years in the NFL. However, following the torn Achilles he suffered at 36, there are legitimate concerns about whether he can return to his former level of play. Several teams, including the New Orleans Saints, New York Giants, Tennessee Titans, and Cleveland Browns, may seek a veteran quarterback like Cousins, which suggests he could find an opportunity to play next season. Only time will reveal where that may be, but if he enters the 2025 season in good health, it’s unlikely he will be sidelined for long.
