Washington Decides on the ‘Redskins’ Name Issue

After the Josh Harris ownership group acquired the Washington Commanders from Dan Snyder in 2023, speculation arose about a potential name change, with many fans advocating for a return to the “Redskins” moniker. However, it appears that this will not be the case. The “Commanders” name was introduced in 2022 after the franchise moved away from the “Redskins” name in 2020, during which time they were referred to simply as the “Washington Football Team.”

The “Commanders” name has not resonated strongly with fans, and until recently, the new ownership had not made a firm commitment to retaining it. That changed this week when Josh Harris provided a clearer stance, confirming that the team will continue as the Washington Commanders. “Yes. I think it’s now being embraced by our team, by our culture, by our coaching staff. We’re going with that,” Harris stated, according to Pro Football Talk.

Prior to this announcement, former team president Jason Wright had made it evident that even if a name change were to occur, the “Redskins” name was not under consideration. “It is not being considered,” Wright told radio station 106.7 The Fan in 2023. “Period.” This definitive statement from Harris should put an end to the speculation once and for all.
