It’s one thing for the Dallas Mavericks to face ridicule on ESPN and other sports platforms for trading Luka Dončić to the Lakers, but to hear it at the Grammys? Mavericks fans might have tuned into their game against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday afternoon and joined play-by-play voice Mark Followill in lamenting the departure of a 25-year-old global superstar. However, for those who chose to watch the Grammys instead, the decision could not have been any less fortunate.
During the Grammy Awards in Los Angeles, comedian Jim Gaffigan took a jab at the Mavericks while welcoming the audience back from a commercial break, quipping that host Trevor Noah had been traded to Dallas. “During the break, I don’t know how to say this: Trevor Noah was traded to the Dallas Mavericks,” he said, drawing laughter from the crowd.

Gaffigan continued, “So I know this is a shock, but I am now your host.” In what many are calling the most shocking trade in NBA history, the Mavericks executed a late Saturday night deal sending Dončić to the Lakers in a three-team trade that brought Anthony Davis to Dallas. Supporters of the Mavericks have been scarce, as the overwhelming reaction to the trade has been negative.
Even the Grammys expressed disbelief at Dallas giving up on Dončić, a 25-year-old superstar poised to become one of NBA’s greatest. While Noah later returned to resume his hosting duties, Mavericks fans are left to face the reality that Dončić isn’t coming back.
