The Dallas Cowboys famously passed on legendary cornerback and Hall of Famer Deion Sanders for their head coaching vacancy. Nonetheless, a former Cowboy might soon join their coaching staff as they head into 2025. Several former players, including Kellen Moore, Deion Sanders, and Jason Witten, have been involved in coaching searches throughout the offseason. However, the Cowboys are considering a less prominent name to potentially fill the new running backs coach position.
According to Cowboys beat writer Clarence Hill Jr., former Cowboys running back Tashard Choice is one of two candidates being considered for the role. Hill reported,
Per source, the Cowboys are choosing between Tashard Choice and Derrick Foster for running backs coach. Foster coached running backs for the Saints last year and previously coached running backs for the Chargers

Choice played for the Cowboys for four seasons from 2008 to 2011 and interned with the team in 2016. While he may lack extensive familiarity with new head coach Brian Schottenheimer, he understands the organization’s culture and the expectations that come with being a Dallas Cowboy. Although the role of running backs coach might seem minor at first glance, the Cowboys intend to emphasize the running back position heavily as they approach 2025. Earlier this week, Stephen Jones, the Cowboys’ director of player personnel, expressed his desire to bring in an offensive coordinator focused on running the football.
The Cowboys have already filled their offensive coordinator vacancy, appointing former Arizona Cardinals offensive line coach Klayton Adams to the role. Should Choice secure the running backs coach position, he will collaborate closely with Adams to enhance the Cowboys’ running game, which underperformed last season. Since 2022, Choice has served as the running backs coach at the University of Texas, where he has worked with notable players like Bijan Robinson and Jonathan Brooks, proving his capability for the new position in Dallas.
