While it would not be surprising for Pete Alonso to re-sign with the New York Mets as a free agent, it’s not a guaranteed outcome. WFAN host Boomer Esiason seems eager to propel a reunion and expressed his wishes on Thursday night, stating, “I’m feeling like Pete is a Met tomorrow.”

His prediction, though ambitious, comes amid reports that while both Alonso and the Mets have a mutual interest in his return, they appear far apart on financial terms—with the Mets reportedly offering a three-year deal up to $70 million, according to The New York Post’s Joel Sherman. Alonso has yet to receive offers from other teams, and with spring training less than two weeks away, time is of the essence.
Esiason defended his timing prediction on the Boomer and Gio show, where he expressed hope for an announcement around 10:05 a.m., saying, “As a diehard Mets fan myself, I want the guy at first base and in the lineup. I believe they’ll come to an agreement today.” Producer Eddie Scozzare mentioned Esiason might possess insider information, to which Esiason responded he did not have a scoop but confidently asserted he was willing to stand by his prediction.
He added, “Listen, all the deducing I do … it’s about people coming together and doing what I believe is the right thing. Given certain people that I have spoken to, I feel optimistic that this is gonna be a really good day in Mets land.” Furthermore, USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reported that discussions are ongoing between the Mets and Alonso regarding an opt-out clause that would allow him to test free agency after the 2025 season. Nightengale noted, “It seems almost inevitable that a resolution will be reached.”
