Contrary to various reports, Tony Dungy has clarified that he is not a candidate for the 2026 Senate race in Michigan. This announcement follows Democrat Gary Peters’ declaration that he will not seek a third term. Dungy, a native of Michigan, had been listed among potential Republican candidates for the open seat, but it seems he will not pursue this path.
The former NFL player, coach, and current NBC football analyst dismissed the notion of running for office, stating, “Not sure where this idea came from but it didn’t come from me,” Dungy expressed on X. “I love my home state of Michigan. I pray they will elect a Senator who honors the Lord and leads the people well. But I can assure you it won’t be me. Number 1, I’m not a politician and Number 2 I live in Florida.”

While Dungy has previously commented on controversial political matters, his name’s mention as a potential political contender isn’t surprising, given the trend of former athletes and coaches entering politics. However, it appears that for now, Dungy will not be joining their ranks.
