The Dallas Cowboys are entering a new chapter with head coach Brian Schottenheimer at the helm, and changes to the team’s roster are on the horizon, particularly at the quarterback position. This season, three quarterbacks—starter Dak Prescott along with backups Cooper Rush and Trey Lance—saw first-team snaps. Both Rush and Lance had opportunities to showcase their talents after Prescott suffered a season-ending injury, but it appears one of them is likely on the way out next season.
According to Dallas Cowboys expert Matthew Holleran from the fansite “Blogging The Boys,” Trey Lance is primed to hit free agency this offseason, leading to the strong likelihood that he will be leaving the Cowboys. “When the Cowboys traded for Trey Lance back in August 2023, the move made little to no sense,” Holleran wrote. “Today, the same thing rings true, and his time in Dallas has almost certainly come to an end.” He adds, with other pressing needs to address, it seems unlikely the team will allocate any cap space to retain Lance as a backup or third-string quarterback. Furthermore, Cooper Rush’s status as a free agent complicates the situation; Holleran notes that the chances of the Cowboys re-signing both quarterbacks are slim, and it’s even less likely they would choose Lance over Rush. “Unless a team gives Rush a deal to compete for a starting job, there’s virtually zero chance Dallas would opt to bring Lance back over the veteran,” Holleran states, emphasizing the organization’s faith in Rush’s capacity to step in if Prescott is injured again.
In summary, it appears Lance’s tenure with the Cowboys is nearing its end, and it remains to be seen how the team will address his replacement.
