Greg Olsen Envisions Another Super Bowl Experience

Greg Olsen has achieved remarkable success as a color analyst, having recently worked Super Bowl LVII. Now, as the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles prepare to face off again in Super Bowl LIX, Olsen finds himself in a different position. He will watch from the sidelines as Tom Brady, who has taken his place as Fox Sports’ No. 1 analyst, teams up with play-by-play announcer Kevin Burkhardt.

Despite receiving high praise for his performance, Olsen was relegated to the network’s No. 2 broadcast team following Fox Sports’ 10-year, $375 million deal with Brady, who has had some struggles in his inaugural season. This move means Olsen will not participate in the Super Bowl, leaving him feeling uncomfortable. In a recent conversation with WCNC Charlotte’s sports director Nick Carboni, Olsen shared his thoughts on this situation.

“A lot of fans want to know — do you think there’s a path for you to be in the booth for championship weekend, a Super Bowl again, in the near future?” Carboni asked.

“I hope so,” Olsen replied. “I’ll be honest, it’s hard sitting on the couch watching the games. You’re living and dying with every broadcast, dissecting everything that’s said and done. My goal getting into this was to not just call regional 1 o’clock games and be content. I’ve called some of the highest-stakes games in NFL history with huge audiences. Not being part of the Super Bowl anymore is challenging; it’s not ideal. Wherever it is, whatever network it’s on, my aim is to prove I’m as good, if not better, than anyone in this industry; I just need a chair.”

Olsen has managed his transition from Fox Sports’ top team gracefully. He has offered broadcasting advice to Brady, and continues to receive accolades for his performances. However, Olsen candidly shared with The Athletic’s Joseph Person that the situation isn’t easy. “I don’t think resentment is likely the right word, but it’s not too far off if I’m being honest,” he told Person regarding any feelings toward Brady or Fox. “I hold no ill will — there’s no personal resentment towards Tom, or K.B. (Kevin Burkhardt) and Erin (Andrews). I still chat with all of them regularly. I hope to see them next week in New Orleans for dinner or a drink and just catch up.”
