As part of its “Black History Always” campaign, ESPN is making a concerted effort to showcase its Black talent both on-screen and behind the scenes. This includes the announcement of an all-Black staff for the broadcast of the game between the Atlanta Hawks and San Antonio Spurs on Feb. 5. According to a release, the broadcast team will feature Mark Jones, Richard Jefferson, and Lisa Salters, while Malika Andrews will host NBA Today and the pregame NBA Countdown. Chiney Ogwumike, Udonis Haslem, and Kendrick Perkins will serve as panelists on both shows.
ESPN is also collaborating with its Andscape vertical to produce exclusive content, including video essays by Michael Wilbon and William Rhoden, along with a piece by Marc J. Spears focusing on Mark Jones’ broadcasting career. The network states that over 40 Black employees will contribute to its NBA coverage on that day, highlighting the roles of behind-the-scenes production staff during the broadcasts.
“I’m thrilled that this broadcast can inspire young people dreaming of a career in sports broadcasting while also bringing together so many talented industry professionals,” said ESPN producer Rodney Vaughn. “It feels like we are creating Black history in real time.” In addition to showcasing its talent, ESPN is partnering with Clark Atlanta University to provide students from the university’s Mass Media program with an inside look at ESPN’s mobile units on-site prior to the game, reflecting the network’s commitment to developing Black leaders in the industry. First launched in 2021, the “Black History Always” campaign aims to highlight Black stories beyond the boundaries of traditional Black History Month in February. Read more here.
