It seems the NBA’s efforts to recruit Caitlin Clark for its All-Star Weekend are falling short. According to Sports Business Journal, the WNBA star is “disinclined” to take part in a 3-point contest that would have pitted her alongside fellow WNBA star Sabrina Ionescu against NBA icons Steph Curry and Klay Thompson. Reportedly, Clark “is not interested” in the traditional shooting format of a 3-point contest, as she usually focuses on catch-and-shoot practice.

Last year’s All-Star Weekend saw Curry and Ionescu participate in a 3-point contest, with Shams Charania reporting in April that the NBA intended to establish a two-on-two format this time around. Nevertheless, this idea may not be entirely dismissed, as SBJ indicated discussions are ongoing with Clark’s representatives. “I wouldn’t say it’s over until the thing happens,” a source informed SBJ. “A lot of this stuff comes together very, very late.”
Last year’s NBA vs. WNBA 3-Point Challenge, which Curry won, generated significant conversation, albeit with some critics arguing that Ionescu was at a disadvantage since she shot from the NBA’s 3-point distance rather than the shorter WNBA line. Thus, it’s understandable that Clark would hesitate to alter her established rhythm and shot mechanics with a competition format that differs from her usual practice.
It’s no surprise that the NBA wants to associate with Caitlin Clark during its All-Star Weekend, especially since NBA TV ratings have seen a decline, while Clark has been instrumental in boosting a ratings and attendance surge in the WNBA.
