After winning the College Football Playoff national title earlier this month, the Ohio State Buckeyes have already lost one of their coordinators, defensive coordinator Jim Knowles, who is leaving to join the Penn State Nittany Lions. Now, it seems there’s a strong possibility that the Buckeyes might lose their offensive coordinator as well. The Buckeyes brought in Chip Kelly as their offensive coordinator during the offseason, enticing him away from the UCLA Bruins, where he was the head coach. However, after just one season with Ohio State, reports indicate Kelly could be looking to make a jump to the NFL.
According to NFL insider Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports, Chip Kelly has become a leading candidate for several vacant NFL offensive coordinator positions. “Sources tell CBS Sports that at the top of the list for several teams is former NFL head coach and current Ohio State offensive coordinator Chip Kelly,” Jones reported. He is reportedly a target for both the Jaguars and Texans OC positions and could also be considered by the Buccaneers, among other potential landing spots.
Kelly’s departure would undeniably be a significant setback for the Buckeyes as they aim to defend their national championship next season. It remains to be seen whether Kelly will accept a role as an NFL offensive coordinator or choose to return to Ohio State for another season.
