Aaron Rodgers’ time with the New York Jets certainly did not unfold as either party anticipated. Recent developments suggest that the future Hall of Famer may be moving on from the Jets, especially following the team’s announcement of new head coach Aaron Glenn and General Manager Darren Mougey. During their press conference, both Glenn and Mougey were questioned about Rodgers’ future, and indications reveal that the team is ready to part ways with the veteran quarterback.
Glenn addressed the situation by emphasizing a team-focused approach. “This thing is not about Aaron Rodgers, folks,” he stated, as reported by ESPN. “This is about the roster. We plan on building the best roster that we can. So, whatever that may be — guard, tackle, defensive tackle — that’s what we’re evaluating.” He reiterated his stance when pressed further, warning reporters not to waste their time asking about Rodgers, saying, “We’re still in the evaluation mode, so for anybody else who’s going to ask that, I’m going to give you the same answer.”
Mougey’s comments during his press conference further clarified the Jets’ direction, reinforcing the impression that the team is preparing to move on from Rodgers this offseason. “First and foremost, I’ve got the utmost respect for Aaron Rodgers and what he’s done in this league as a player. [He’s] one of the greatest of all time to play the position — one of the greatest players of all time,” he remarked, according to ESPN. Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk noted that Mougey’s choice of words suggests Rodgers’ departure is likely, interpreting, “Two words. Utmost respect. That’s the pillow before the punch. No one ever expresses ‘utmost respect’ for someone they plan to continue to employ.”
While neither Rodgers nor the Jets have made an official statement regarding his status for the upcoming year, the writing on the wall seems quite clear.
