The Dallas Cowboys appear to be falling apart before the nation, having mishandled the contract situation of former head coach Mike McCarthy and subsequently finding themselves behind in the coaching cycle. Eventually, the Cowboys promoted offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer to the position of head coach, despite his lack of play-calling experience during McCarthy’s tenure, leaving many fans and analysts bewildered.
Schottenheimer was officially introduced as the team’s head coach during a press conference attended by team owner and general manager Jerry Jones. According to multiple reports, things took an unexpected turn when Jones was questioned about the controversial hire. As noted by Marcus Mosher, “Jerry Jones is in tears during this press conference. I don’t know what is going on.”
Further, as reported by Matt Owen, Jones stated, “I’ve taken more risk in the last 5 years than I have in my entire life. Sometimes when I look in the mirror, I’m not sure why I take the risks I do.” This elicited confusion among those present. RJ Ochoa added that Jones rambled about his experience at the Senior Bowl and NFL Combine, expressing a desire to coach, without addressing the actual hiring of Schottenheimer for several minutes.
Prominent league insider Ari Meirov shared a clip from Jones’ tirade on Twitter: https://twittte.com/MySportsUpdate/status/1883934693923643659, prompting fans to respond on social media. One fan commented, “Hiring a guy in your own building that you know well is operating out of your comfort zone?” Meanwhile, another fan quipped, “I’d actually appreciate it if Jerry just came out and said he’s coaching his own team and he doesn’t care what anyone thinks about it. That would at least be interesting.”
Another fan expressed their bewilderment, questioning, “How is Jerry Jones still functioning?” It will be intriguing to see how Schottenheimer performs in his first opportunity as a head coach.
