On Sunday, the Washington Commanders will face the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship Game, marking the most significant game for the organization in over three decades. However, Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury might have other considerations on his mind during the matchup. Previously, Kingsbury served as the head coach for the Arizona Cardinals from 2019 to 2022, but after a disappointing end to his tenure, he briefly returned to college coaching before rejoining the NFL as an assistant in Washington. The results have been remarkable both for Kingsbury and the Commanders, especially as he has excelled in mentoring rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels. As a consequence, Kingsbury has emerged as a potential head coaching candidate once again.
According to Pro Football Talk, Kingsbury has yet to decide whether he will interview for the head coaching vacancy in New Orleans, which is the only remaining head coaching position in the NFL. Despite this, the Saints reportedly still have an interest in him. Kingsbury opted against a virtual interview the week following the Commanders’ Wild Card victory over the Buccaneers, suggesting he might not be keen on the Saints opening. If Kingsbury is indeed interested in the Saints job, he may have to wait until after the Super Bowl to pursue it.
It’s possible that Kingsbury is waiting until the Commanders’ season concludes before expressing any of his intentions. After all, the organization likely wants him focused solely on his current responsibilities. Regardless, considering the success the Commanders have experienced this season, Kingsbury is likely to be a sought-after candidate in the coaching market for years to come, even if he doesn’t pursue the Saints vacancy this year.
