UConn head coach Dan Hurley made headlines again on Saturday as ESPN’s College GameDay addressed his recent confrontation with officials. This sparked a lively discussion on social media, with analyst Jeff Goodman humorously jabbing fellow analyst Seth Greenberg over Hurley’s remarks. Everyone on CGD chimed in regarding Hurley’s actions during Tuesday night’s game, where he criticized an official. A viral clip captured Hurley declaring, “Don’t turn your back on me. I’m the best coach in the f*cking sport.”
After the game, the UConn head coach expressed frustration that other coaches engage in similar conduct yet he is often singled out. CGD analyst Jay Bilas criticized Hurley’s justification, remarking that it was merely an excuse for poor behavior. In contrast, Greenberg defended the two-time defending national champion coach passionately, sharing that Hurley had told him he felt “embarrassed” by his outburst.
“Dan Hurley … is not fake. That’s just the way it is,” Greenberg stated. “If you’re a UConn fan, you love him. If you’re playing against him, you absolutely hate him. But his players love him; they give their all for him, the culture’s incredible, and the identity’s unbelievable. Right now, he is good for the sport of basketball, just like Coach K (Mike Krzyzewski), Gary Williams, and Jim Boeheim were when they did similar things. It is what it is.”

Goodman, however, was not as supportive of Hurley and ridiculed him in a humorous post on X. “Jay Bilas is spot-on about Hurley’s behavior towards the officials: ‘It’s just an excuse for bad behavior,’” Goodman tweeted. “However, the PR firm of Greenberg, Greenberg & Greenberg — which has been retained by Hurley — clearly disagrees.”

Ultimately, there’s really no effective PR “spin” that can be put on Hurley’s actions this past week.
