The Dallas Cowboys have decided to appoint offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer as their new head coach following the departure of Mike McCarthy. This decision has not sat well with Cowboys legend Michael Irvin, who expressed his dissatisfaction in a recent social media video. Irvin is particularly upset that the team chose Schottenheimer over the Colorado Buffaloes head coach and fellow Hall of Famer, Deion Sanders. “We lost an opportunity here,” Irvin said in the video. “I was pushing for Deion Sanders to be the next coach. And I still stand ten toes down on that push.”
While Irvin acknowledged that he doesn’t have a personal issue with Schottenheimer, he believes hiring from the previous staff, especially after recent failures, is counterproductive. “You’re bringing in someone that already was inside as the head coach,” he stated, expressing concern over lost opportunities that might not be recoverable. Irvin feels the team requires a significant change, emphasizing, “I know what we needed. They don’t have curfew. They don’t have discipline. We were fourth in penalties this year. So how do you fix that? . . . How do you do that when you’re coming from inside?”
Irvin is particularly frustrated as the Cowboys watch their NFC East rivals, the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Commanders, compete for a chance at the Super Bowl in the NFC Championship game. “All eyes on them. Our enemies on all fronts. . . And [in] a position that we haven’t held in 30 [freaking] years,” he remarked. As the Cowboys prepare for the upcoming season under Schottenheimer’s leadership, Irvin’s lack of optimism is evident.
