The Dallas Cowboys’ decision to hire Brian Schottenheimer as their new head coach has left NFL media and fans astonished. The longtime NFL offensive coordinator is certainly not the splashy hire many anticipated, and the timing of the announcement on Friday night led many to think that the team meant to bury the news during the clichéd Friday news dump, where significant stories often go unnoticed due to their timing.
During Friday’s The Right Time with Bomani Jones, Jones and guest Mina Kimes critiqued the Cowboys’ choice of Schottenheimer. How could they do this when the announcement came hours after the podcast aired? Jones had planned ahead, confident in reports suggesting this outcome. “We’re recording this Thursday around noon on the East Coast; by this time (Friday), I believe it will be official that Brian Schottenheimer is the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys,” Jones stated, before proceeding with his and Kimes’ critique.
“Here I was thinking Jerry was afraid he was going to die and that he needed to hurry up and win a championship … now he’s apparently got like a 30-year plan,” Jones remarked, referring to 82-year-old team owner Jerry Jones. Kimes added, “For Jones, there’s winning, attention, and then like loyalty is maybe above winning. The idea he was going to go internal makes a ton of sense to me.” Both hosts echoed a similar sentiment: “Literally no one’s ever been happy to have Brian Schottenheimer as the offensive coordinator — ever,” said Jones, while Kimes expressed doubt about Schottenheimer’s qualifications for head coaching. “I don’t think he’s bad, per se, at his job; it’s never occurred to me that he would be a head coach.”

Schottenheimer has spent the last two seasons as the Cowboys’ offensive coordinator and previously held the same position with the Jets, Rams, and Seahawks. Over 14 years as an OC, his offenses ranked in the bottom half of the league in total yards in all but three seasons. Despite his father, Marty, winning 200 games as an NFL head coach, Jones pointed out that the lack of previous head coaching opportunities for Schottenheimer is a concerning sign. “He’s got a last name we recognize, and it took this long for someone to make him a head coach. That just means that s*** just wasn’t in the cards. Is there a single other owner that’d make him a head coach?”
