Quarterback J.T. Barrett had a legendary career with the Ohio State Buckeyes and is now transitioning into coaching with his first full-time position as a quarterbacks coach. According to a report from Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune, new Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson is bringing Barrett on board as the team’s quarterbacks coach. Previously, Barrett served as the assistant quarterbacks coach under Johnson with the Detroit Lions and is now stepping into the primary coaching role in Chicago.
“J.T. Barrett also coming from Detroit to join Ben Johnson’s staff. He will be the #Bears quarterbacks coach. Served as asst QB coach the previous 2 years for the Lions,” Biggs mentioned in a post on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.
Barrett became the starting quarterback of the Ohio State Buckeyes during his redshirt freshman season just before the 2014 campaign began, taking charge after an injury sidelined then-starter Braxton Miller. Over four seasons as the starting quarterback, he led the Buckeyes to two College Football Playoff appearances, two Big Ten championships, and celebrated four victories over their rival Michigan Wolverines. Ohio State also captured the national title in 2014, although Barrett suffered a season-ending injury in the final game of the regular season.
After concluding his career at Ohio State, Barrett entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent, spending time with the New Orleans Saints, Seattle Seahawks, and Pittsburgh Steelers during the 2018 and 2019 seasons.
