Robert Saleh is set to return to the San Francisco 49ers, rejoining their coaching staff as defensive coordinator—the same role he held before being hired by the New York Jets. This marks a significant move in the coaching landscape, pulling him away from any lingering head coaching opportunities.
Following a disappointing season in which the 49ers missed the playoffs after three consecutive NFC Championship Game appearances, this decision aims to strengthen the team. The Athletic was the first to report on Saleh’s hire.
Saleh previously served as the 49ers’ defensive coordinator from 2017 to 2020, where his efforts contributed to the team making it to the Super Bowl in the 2019 season. His successful tenure made him a sought-after coach, prompting the Jets to hire him. However, his time in New York was challenging, culminating in his in-season firing; he later took on a consulting role with the Green Bay Packers.
Now, Saleh is heading to one of the Packers’ biggest rivals, and to a team brimming with talent. The 49ers will hope that his return will pave the way for a playoff comeback next year, making his reappointment a promising first step.
