After spending a season with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Russell Wilson is set to enter free agency this offseason. While he has shown interest in staying, another team appears to be interested as well. On Friday, former Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll was named the new head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders, hinting at a potential reunion with Wilson.
NFL insider Jeff Howe from The Athletic reported that Carroll and Wilson have “mended fences,” suggesting that the veteran quarterback could serve as a “stopgap” for the Raiders as they work towards a long-term solution at quarterback. Howe noted, “With Pete Carroll taking over the Raiders, one name I’ve heard to watch at QB: Russell Wilson. They’ve mended fences, per source, and Wilson could be a stopgap while the Raiders develop a long-term answer,” in a post on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.
During their ten seasons with the Seattle Seahawks, Wilson and Carroll achieved significant success, including a Super Bowl XLVIII victory following the 2013 season. The prospect of their reunion has spurred a variety of reactions on social media.
One Raiders fan expressed displeasure, saying, “Already not thrilled with the Carroll hire. If we bring in Russ too I might cry.” Conversely, another fan chimed in, “Bring Russ back West!” highlighting mixed emotions about the potential move. Another commented, “This would make a lot of sense,” while someone else added, “Russell Wilson vs Sean Payton twice a year. Yes please.” Some fans even speculated, “The Steelers QB potentially heading back west for a reunion?”
On a more critical note, a user remarked, “Imagine trying to get rid of Wilson for years and finally being rid of him only to come out of retirement and have your GM stick you with Wilson again.” With free agency still some time away, uncertainty looms over Wilson’s future; however, if he departs from Pittsburgh, Las Vegas could be a fitting new home.
