In recent years, Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo has been a sought-after name in NFL head coaching searches. Andy Reid believes that another opportunity for his longtime assistant is long overdue. Spagnuolo has consistently excelled at bewildering NFL offenses, and this season was no exception, with the Chiefs ranking among the top five teams for the fewest points allowed in the league.
Under Spagnuolo’s guidance, the Chiefs have won three Super Bowls. While Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid often receive the majority of the accolades, Reid argues that Spagnuolo deserves equal recognition. He discussed this on The Insiders on NFL Network, advocating for Spagnuolo to receive a head coaching position. “They’ll get a great football coach,” Reid stated. “A great person. I think that’s probably the most important thing. He understands the game, he understands the players. He deserves another shot. I’m one of his biggest fans. Other than his sweet wife, I’m probably right next in line there. I want him to have every opportunity he can to do that.”

It’s significant that Andy Reid, who is preparing for the AFC Championship Game against the Buffalo Bills, publicly advocated for his assistant. Spagnuolo has demonstrated exceptional defensive acumen and has been a key player in the Chiefs’ triumph over the last six years. However, he has previously experienced a head coaching stint with the then-St. Louis Rams, resulting in a disappointing 10-38 record over three seasons. There’s a strong argument that he merits another head coaching chance in a more favorable environment than that which he had with the Rams, but only time will reveal if such an opportunity arises.
