Michael Kay Shares Unexpected Update on Aaron Glenn and Aaron Rodgers

If Aaron Glenn desires the New York Jets head coach position, it’s effectively his. According to Michael Kay, he envisions Aaron Rodgers as his quarterback. With speculation about Glenn’s impending arrival in New York reaching a fever pitch, there are also whispers about his intentions regarding the quarterback position. On his radio show, Kay did a rather effective impression of Adam Schefter, indicating that Glenn may have his sights set on bringing Rodgers back in 2025.

“For the Jets, the one thing you don’t have to worry about is the head coach’s salary,” said Kay. “That doesn’t count against anybody’s salary cap. And there are leaks suggesting that whatever Glenn is paid, he’s expressed a desire to retain Aaron Rodgers.”

“And I genuinely believe that’s the right move. I mentioned this on Friday, coming from someone who isn’t overly impressed with Aaron Rodgers on or off the field. However, if you’re going to reassure Rodgers, you need a solid plan. What’s your strategy if you choose not to bring back Aaron Rodgers? Not retaining him results in a considerable cap hit—a dead cap issue. If you do bring him back, there’s still a cap hit, but at least you have a quarterback.”

This is the same Kay who previously celebrated Rodgers’ struggles with the Jets, stating it made him feel “warm and fuzzy” and labeling the 41-year-old quarterback as a “kind of jackass.” Nonetheless, Kay brought up a valid point regarding Rodgers since the start of the 2024 season: “He was not coached this year after Game 5. And with all due respect to Robert Saleh, who’s gaining traction in head coaching interviews, I doubt he was being coached during his first five games. A clear sign of this was when Rodgers missed the mandatory minicamp; it demonstrated that he was essentially running the organization.”

“Consequently, he wasn’t coached or disciplined. When a new coach steps in, you’d expect him to hire a competent offensive mind and ensure the quarterback gets proper coaching. If Aaron Glenn were to come in and assert, ‘We’re going to do it my way,’ Rodgers might respond, ‘You know what? I want out.’ It’s uncertain whether Rodgers desires to control everything,” Kay suggested.

“If Glenn gets the job, then one Aaron should endorse the other Aaron. You’ve heard of the Yankees’ Aarons—Aaron Boone and Aaron Judge. This will be the Jets’ Aarons—Aaron Glenn and Aaron Rodgers. That’s the way to move forward.” All indicators suggest that Rodgers is inclined to continue his career, even after admitting he requires a “mental break” before making a decision for the 2025 NFL season. Despite Rex Ryan confidently asserting that Rodgers wouldn’t return to One Jets Drive, he’s not a viable candidate for the coaching position.

Surprisingly, a Yankees announcer breaking significant NFL news is unexpected. Yet while Kay may not be the first to announce Glenn’s official hiring, his insights on the coaching search and the franchise’s future are noteworthy. So, though he’s not jumping ahead, he clearly implies that if Glenn assumes the head coach role, retaining Rodgers could be a pivotal decision for the Jets’ future.
