Sports betting has surged in popularity, and ESPN has embraced this trend. The company initially partnered with prominent betting platforms like FanDuel and DraftKings through targeted commercials, and its 2023 licensing agreement with Penn Entertainment culminating in the establishment of ESPN Bet has solidified its presence in the market. Despite disappointing earnings at launch, ESPN Bet currently holds the sixth position in the U.S. online sports betting arena, as reported by Sports Business Journal.
With this enhanced involvement in gaming, ESPN acknowledges the responsibility to educate viewers and bettors about the inherent risks. This commitment is exemplified by the launch of their new “responsible gaming campaign,” titled “The Talk,” featuring two advertisements. One ad includes SportsCenter anchor Elle Duncan, where a young man on his wedding day is approached by his father about betting. After the son dismisses his father’s concerns, Duncan steps in, asking if he’ll discuss “setting a budget when you bet,” which prompts a warning about “chasing your losses” after the young man shares previous betting success.
Duncan reinforces that “At ESPN, we believe the best play is a smart play.” Another spot featuring Striewski is set to debut later this year. This campaign will also promote the 1-800-GAMBLER hotline and direct viewers to ESPN.com/smartplay for further information.

“At ESPN, we believe it’s our responsibility to help sports fans understand the risks of sports betting and learn what smart betting looks like,” stated Kevin Martinez, Vice President of ESPN Corporate Citizenship. He emphasized the importance of responsible gaming during discussions about the ESPN BET sportsbook, which offers various resources and tools for safe gambling practices. ESPN’s commitment extends beyond just resources, as the network recognizes its influence through content and advertising related to betting.
This growing sports betting landscape poses complex challenges. Recently, ESPN sparked debate with a post on its X account celebrating the betting achievements of network personality Erin Dolan, raising questions about the juxtaposition of promoting betting while advocating for responsible practices. While some might view this as contradictory, it’s a common occurrence across various industries, akin to alcohol brands advertising while promoting responsible drinking.
“More education on the topic, such as this ‘The Talk’ campaign, is always beneficial,” noted Brett Abarbanel, Ph.D., Executive Director of the International Gaming Institute at UNLV. He commended ESPN for taking a proactive approach to responsible gambling messaging, emphasizing the value of fostering healthy betting habits, which includes knowing when to take risks as well as when to refrain.
