The Pittsburgh Steelers find themselves mired in a self-imposed purgatory, refusing to significantly alter their coaching staff or philosophy. This reluctance has resulted in a prolonged record of hovering around .500 and disappointing first-round playoff exits. This year’s playoff departure was marked by the performance of veteran quarterback Russell Wilson. After starting strong following a calf injury that sidelined him for the season’s initial six games, Wilson’s performance waned as the year progressed, culminating in the team losing their last five games.
Now, a Steelers insider has reported that the franchise is looking to break away from mediocrity by moving in a new direction, likely parting ways with the aging Wilson. His declining mobility has made it increasingly difficult for him to evade sacks behind a shaky offensive line.
According to Steelers Depot, Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette indicated earlier this season that there was mutual interest between Wilson and the Steelers regarding a future together. However, following the team’s late-season collapse, it seems Dulac has received updates that cast doubt on this possibility.
During an appearance on WDVE’s Morning Show with Randy Baumann, Dulac remarked about the potential for an extension between Wilson and the Steelers: “The word that was told to me was ‘intention’ on both sides to do another deal, but I don’t think that’s going to happen.” Fans quickly took to social media to express their opinions on Dulac’s comments.
One fan expressed a hope that financial considerations would guide the decision rather than the search for a better fit, suggesting that Wilson, while not a long-term solution, might still be what the aging team needs for the present. Another fan questioned the team’s desire to retain Wilson, citing his performance at the end of the season and reported tensions with Coach Smith. “He extended my blood pressure numbers with his (poor) play down the stretch,” added another fan. As the situation unfolds, it will be intriguing to see what direction the Steelers choose if they indeed decide to move on from Wilson.
