The Caray family boasts a rich heritage in baseball broadcasting. Chris Caray, one of the voices for the former Oakland Athletics, carries the weight of that legacy. “I think that there is pressure,” Chris remarked in a recent episode of Short and to the Point. “People exaggerate how demanding it is. Being a cerebral and overthinking individual, I view my last name as both a blessing and a curse. Many people forget the downside; there are always those who hope to see you fail.”
The Caray lineage began with Hall of Fame broadcaster Harry Caray, who announced for the St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago White Sox, and Chicago Cubs. His son, Skip, also made his mark as a broadcaster for the Atlanta Braves, while Skip’s son, Chip, and Chris’ father, currently voices the Cardinals’ games. Additionally, Chris’ twin brother, Stefan, is a notable figure in minor league broadcasting. “There are many who judge you without knowing you, and when you prove them wrong, you often find you need to work twice as hard,” Chris added.
Since he was four years old, Chris has felt this pressure, recalling instances when he was patted on the head with comments about following in his family’s footsteps. “It’s almost like that expectation was instilled in me early on, with both positive and negative effects. This drive has propelled me to achieve my goals more quickly than many anticipated.” He had the chance to share a memorable moment with his father in 2024 when the A’s faced off against the Cardinals, with Chip in one booth and Chris in the other. “That was a truly special moment for me, coinciding with Jackie Robinson Day. Everything aligned perfectly.”
