Former New York Jets quarterback Josh McCown knows the Jets organization well from his playing days. The question on many Jets fans’ minds is whether he could become the next head coach for the 2025-26 season, especially after he interviewed for the vacant position, which the team announced on Friday.
Throughout his 16-year NFL career, McCown was viewed as a dependable backup, but he is now emerging as a sought-after offensive mind in coaching. Currently serving as the quarterbacks coach for the Minnesota Vikings, he has contributed to a successful season led by journeyman quarterback Sam Darnold, who has undoubtedly experienced the best year of his career. McCown could benefit from Darnold’s revival as an NFL quarterback.
The Jets have been active in their search for a head coach, interviewing numerous candidates, including Joe Brady, Brian Flores, Aaron Glenn, Jeff Hafley, Vance Joseph, Mike Locksley, Matt Nagy, Ron Rivera, Darren Rizzi, Rex Ryan, Bobby Slowik, Arthur Smith, Steve Spagnuolo, Jeff Ulbrich, and Joe Whitt. Although McCown faces significant competition, he has prior experience with the organization from his two seasons in 2017 and 2018, potentially giving him an advantage due to established relationships within the Jets’ building.
Regardless of the outcome of this hiring process, McCown is likely to remain a name of interest in coaching searches as he continues to advance in his career.
