Russell Wilson served as the starting quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers this season, but after an underwhelming performance down the stretch, it’s evident that the Steelers are parting ways with him. While he had strong outings in the early season, his play deteriorated significantly later on, leading to frequent turnovers and an inability to score points. This decline contributed to a five-game losing streak, which culminated in a playoff loss to the Baltimore Ravens.
NFL insider Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated reported this week that the Steelers were “frustrated” with Wilson’s performance toward the end of the season, casting doubt on his future in Pittsburgh. He mentioned, “Wilson and Justin Fields are both free agents. Will either be back in Pittsburgh? There was frustration with Wilson down the stretch, so I’m not sure how far the Steelers will be willing to go to keep him,” in his article for Sports Illustrated.
Breer also indicated that the team’s playoff game against the Ravens was expected to “help set the course” for Wilson’s future. Unfortunately for him, the offense faltered, likely sealing his fate: “I’d heard before the playoff game Saturday that the playoffs would likely help set the course. Based on how the offense played…” he noted. Although the Steelers have yet to make any formal announcement about Wilson’s status, it seems increasingly clear that his time with the team has come to an end.
