It’s Becoming Increasingly Challenging to Defend College Football

You can debate Kirk Herbstreit’s role in college football, but his power and influence are undeniable. As one of the sport’s strongest advocates, he also serves as a critical voice, particularly evident during ESPN’s initial coverage of the 12-team College Football Playoff. Herbstreit actively shapes how the sport is perceived and consumed. Todd McShay, on his The McShay Show podcast, praised his former colleague, stating, “There isn’t a more important voice in college football: an advocate for the sport.” However, opinions may differ on this, but McShay firmly believes in Herbstreit’s significance.

McShay elaborated on Herbstreit’s integrity, saying, “It’s never about a program; it’s never about a conference. Having been behind the scenes, I can honestly say that the most important thing for Kirk has always been about what’s best for the game.” Herbstreit’s commitment to protecting college football is commendable, reinforcing his role as its defender, although he often faces challenges in this position.

“I just find it’s always been my role… I’ve never looked at anybody as a competitor,” Herbstreit said, emphasizing his collaborative approach with colleagues like McShay, David Pollack, and others who share his passion for football. He prefers engaging with those who truly love the game, rather than seeking viral fame through sensationalism.

Reflecting on his rapport with McShay, Herbstreit noted that he would often send uplifting messages to him. He acknowledges the current complexities in college football surrounding NIL, the Transfer Portal, and the expanded playoff system, which lead to accusations of bias in their analyses. “It’s tougher and tougher to defend the sport,” he remarked, highlighting his unique position of conversing with coaches on a more personal level.

Despite the scrutiny that comes with his visibility, Herbstreit is prepared to navigate the fine line between reality and what is publicly acceptable, even if it puts him in difficult situations. When the inevitable backlash occurs, it is evident that it affects him, even if he maintains that he isn’t directly managing his social media accounts.
